Addiction is when the body or mind does not have control over what they are doing, taking or using. People can be addicted to alcohol, gambling, caffeine, drugs, sex, and many other things. An addiction may reach a point at which it is harmful. The difference between a habit and an addiction is with a habit you are in control of your choices, with an addiction you are not in control of your choices.

Our culture "normalizes" drinking but a psychotherapist can diagnose someone with an alcohol problem.  They can use various scales as well as the diagnostic manual ICD-10 to assist them in making the proper diagnosis.

The behaviors you describe are boundary violations. You can not change your spouse, but you can respond to his behaviors in ways that protect your boundaries and ensure your safety.
